REAR FANGED
COLUBRID
 |
|
|
Lee Moore, Sr. caught this Venomous
Mussurana, a rear fanged colubrid, in Moyobama, Peru.
These snakes have a mild disposition and therefore rarely bite.
The
Mussurana is of the Family colubridae. Most colubrids are not
venomous and the ones that are venomous are usually mildly so. The
bite of the Mussurana produces symptoms of local swelling and
ecchymosis (bruising effect) without any coagulation or systemic
disturbances. Treatment is symptomatic of local effects. There are
few colubrids like the Boomslang (Dispholidus typus) of Africa,
which has been known to cause fatalities. The Twig or Vine snake (
Thelortornis Sp.) is also the only other Rear Fanged Colubrid known
to cause death in humans. |
